Assisting Neglected Horses
Berks County, Pennsylvania – When humane agents seized 15 neglected horses living in filth on a Schuylkill County farm in early October, several of the animals were taken to the Animal Rescue League of Berks for rehabilitation. The Animal Rescue League sent out a call for help to the equine community, and the response was swift and generous.
The Berks Equine Council contacted local Purina Mills representatives and distributors, requesting donations of feed. Purina offered to match the donations of its two largest distributors in Berks, Oley Valley Feed and Reifsnyder’s Ag Center. As luck would have it, in mid-October Oley Valley Feed was celebrating the grand re-opening of its remodeled store in Oley, and was running a buy-one-get-one free sale on Purina Feed! Purina Mills representatives posted the story of the unfortunate horses on their display at Oley Valley Feed’s grand re-opening, and the public generously responded by buying and donating additional bags of feed to the Animal Rescue League.
So far, nearly two tons of feed have been donated by Purina Mills, Oley Valley Feed, Reifsnyder’s Ag Center, and the public! The Berks Equine Council then turned its attention to meeting other practical horse keeping needs. Members of the BEC donated halters, lead ropes, brushes, and wormers; and Intrepid International of New Holland outfitted the three miniature horses with brand-new warm winter blankets! Although the rehabilitation period for the neglected horses is expected to be lengthy, the support from the BEC, Purina and its distributors, Intrepid International, and the equine community will help ease the financial burden on the Animal Rescue League as it focuses its efforts on restoring the horses to good health.
